The Overall Structure of the Hymn of True Faith is Clarified at the 2,000 Tatami Mat Hall on Sep 13
Lectures on the Hymn of True Faith, written by Master Shinran, are held at the 2,000 Tatami Mat Hall. The overall structure of the Hymn of True Faith was explained during the lecture, from the beginning lines of “I have fully entrusted myself to the Buddha of Immeasurable Life” to the closing lines of “Place your faith in the teachings of the eminent priests of Buddhism.”
A lady from Tokyo who attended the lecture said, “I learned today that throughout the Hymn of True Faith is praise for the boundless Vow-power of Amida Buddha, which will save us by settling our birth in the Pure Land no matter how evil we are, praise for Shakyamuni Buddha, who taught us about Amida Buddha’s Supreme Vow, and praise for the Seven Patriarchs, who passed on the teachings.
There was also a man from Miyazaki Prefecture who was happy he had attended the lecture. He said, “I learned really well how strongly Master Shinran desired for us to obtain the same mind as him, the mind which is certain of birth in the Pure Land, and that the only path to do so is through listening to the teachings of the Seven Patriarchs.”
KI MYO MU RYO JU NYO RAI NA MU HU KA SHI GI KO In the beginning of the Hymn of True Faith, Master Shinran expresses his great happiness at having been saved by Amida Buddha and at having his birth in the Pure Land settled in a split-second of ichinen.
Thought of the Day
Shakyamuni taught, “There is no fixed, unchanging ‘I’ or self.” He denied that there was an unchanging, inborn character. The self is constantly changing.
